It wasn’t always a smooth ride for Colonial Brewing Co; CBCo was founded in 2004 and started with a mild success. In 2006, the company ran into some cash flow problems before growing into the major success that it is today. Despite the controversy surrounding its name, CBCo managed to rise above and continue producing beer of excellent tastes. CBCo has multiple award-winning beers and the brewery was even awarded 'Champion Australian Brewery' and 'Champion International Small Brewery' at the Australian International Beer Awards!

Colonial Brewing Co may be one of the best breweries in Australia, but it had a pretty rocky start. The brewing company was founded by serial entrepreneur Ross Smith in 2004, and it did well enough to catch the attention of Empire Beer Group. The group purchased the company in 2006 with the intention of riding along Colonial’s early success, but they ran into cash flow issues which impeded Colonial’s growth.

By 2008, Empire Beer Group’s dreams had been completely shattered and they sold Colonial to its current owner - Chris Morris. Colonial began to grow under Morris’ care; the brand was gaining traction and they finally had stability. In fact, Colonial Brewing beers had been growing at a double-digit rate in 2018-2019!

Despite their overwhelming success, Colonial had a major controversy of their own. Although the founder of Colonial Brewing did not have any malicious intent in choosing its name, it was still problematic as it spoke to Australia’s history of colonialism.

After extensive consultation with its customers and stakeholders, the company chose to rebrand itself as CBCo Brewing. The letters - CB - were retained to remember the efforts of those who helped build CBCo to what it is today.

CBCo’s philosophy and values

CBCo was born in Margaret River, Australia. It was one of the first breweries established in the heart of the wine country on Western Australia’s wild coastline. CBCo takes great pride in its home, and it's constantly motivated and inspired by the region’s passionate community and simple lifestyle. Like its motto, “brewed small, lived big”, CBCo is dedicated to creating sessionable beers that are perfect for everyday drinkers and craft lovers!

CBCo is made by Australians and made for Australians. The brewery is situated on a farm and the brand fully encapsulates Aussie country living. CBCo’s Aussie drinker mentality is reinforced by its 360 lid cans; the lids peel off completely, which allows for greater aroma and aeration.

CBCo’s innovative cans are Australia’s first but are unfortunately no longer in production due to the worldwide aluminium can shortage. Nevertheless, we can definitely appreciate the brewery’s efforts in their attempts to recreate the sensuous experience of drinking a glass of good ol’ beer but in a can!
