More About Me

In contrast to all the other Trappist breweries, Orval Brewery makes only one beer for the public, and that beer is me. I was first brewed in 1931, and am the singular focus of all the Trappist monks in Abbey Notre-Dame d'Orval. The monks have managed to make me into a beer of a depth and character so unmatched that brewers from all over the world have cited me as their favourite beer.

My masterful complexity, drinkability and distinctive taste are largely attributed to a combination of masterful brewing techniques and a unique strain of Belgian yeast. With my deep orange-amber colour and large foamy head, I offer aromas of leather, spice, earthiness and flavours of fruity hop, acidic base and dry finish. I'm a world-class beer that demands attention and can be bottle-conditioned (meaning my flavour can evolve over the years with aging if you cellar me right).

Orval Brewery

Located within the confines of Orval Abbey – a Trappist monastery that was built in 1070, the Orval Brewery was created in 1931 to finance its enormous reconstruction works after it was destroyed in a fire during the French revolution. The monastery hired lay workers from the outset, including a master brewer who invented the recipe of the now-legendary Orval beer. As with the other eleven Trappist breweries in the world, Trappist monks will not increase beer production based on demand or profit motives, but only enough to support the monastery and other charitable causes, resulting in its fairly limited supply.
