Orval Belgian Strong Ale

| 6.2% ABV

In contrast to all the other Trappist breweries, Orval Brewery makes only one beer for the public. First brewed in 1931, the Orval beer is the singular focus of the Trappist monks in Orval Abbey, who has produced a beer of depth and character so unmatched that brewers from all over the world have cited Orval as their favourite beer. The masterful complexity, drinkability and its very distinctive taste are largely attributed to its unique combination of brewing techniques: top-fermented, dry-hopped and then spontaneously fermented in the bottle. With its deep orange-amber colour, foamy head, fruity and slightly acidic aroma, pronounced earthiness and tartness with a very dry finish, Orval is a beer that demands attention.

About the Brand

Located within the confines of Orval Abbey – a Trappist monastery that was built in 1070, the Orval Brewery was created in 1931 to finance its enormous reconstruction works after it was destroyed in a fire during the French revolution. The monastery hired lay workers from the outset, including a master brewer who invented the recipe of the now-legendary Orval beer. As with the other eleven Trappist breweries in the world, Trappist monks will not increase beer production based on demand or profit motives, but only enough to support the monastery and other charitable causes, resulting in its fairly limited supply.
