Unlike all the other Trappist breweries, Orval makes only one beer and one beer only. Needless to say, the only fitting way to drink this esteemed beer is via its ceremonial chalice glass. As the official Orval glass, I feature etched detailing from my body to stem and come with an elegant silver rim that matches my abbey's iconic blue and grey emblem. My narrow glass bottom is riveted to incite bubbles and my wide mouth helps to catch and retain a foam head. With me, you can enjoy Orval the way the monks intended you to.
Located within the confines of Orval Abbey – a Trappist monastery that was built in 1070, the Orval Brewery was created in 1931 to finance its enormous reconstruction works after it was destroyed in a fire during the French revolution. The monastery hired lay workers from the outset, including a master brewer who invented the recipe of the now-legendary Orval beer. As with the other eleven Trappist breweries in the world, Trappist monks will not increase beer production based on demand or profit motives, but only enough to support the monastery and other charitable causes, resulting in its fairly limited supply.
