let's tap into their story!

La Trappe’s history can be traced back to 1881, when a group of French Trappist monks sought refuge in the moorlands of Berkel-Enschot, Brabant. The moorlands had farmhouses and a sheep barn, the latter of which was temporarily converted into a monastery on the 5th of March, 1881, where the monks celebrated the first Holy Mass.

In order to support themselves and fulfil their charity duties, the Trappists decided to brew beer as a source of income. To this very day, the monks continue to fill their lives with prayer and work within the walls of the abbey. The monks decided to build a new brewery so as to pay for the construction of a new abbey. They also built a male tower, which to this day dominates the view of the brewery.

La Trappe’s signature brews

In 1928, the brewery introduced La Trappe Blond - a blond and under-fermented ale with 4% ABV - and later continued to release a variety of brews, including pilsners, bocks, and Dortmunders. In the 1960s, La Trappe looked to collaborate with another Belgian brewery - Stella Artois - due to the increasing demand. The collaboration was short-lived as the monks decided to take the brewing process back into their own hands in 1980.
In the same year, the monks started experimenting with stronger beers and created the brewery’s famous Belgian-style Dubbel, and an even heavier brew called La Trappe Tripel. A few years later, the brewery introduced yet another potent brew to its repertoire - the La Trappe Quadrupel. Perhaps to counter its selection of strong and intense beers, La Trappe added a light and fruity witbier to its collection in 2003 - the La Trappe Witte Trappist.

La Trappe’s charitable ethos and beyond

Like the other Trappist breweries, La Trappe uses the Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) logo on their beers. In order to use this certification, the brewery must fulfil the following requirements:

1) The product(s) must be made within the walls of a Trappist abbey
2) The product(s) must be made by or under the supervision of the monastery community
3) Most of the profit must be spent on social work

As such, La Trappe doesn’t brew for profit, but instead uses every penny it earns to fund charitable programs and raise money for the monastery. The brewery prioritises corporate social responsibility and also sustainability. By working with the Diamant Group and the Prins Heerlijk foundation, La Trappe can offer work to people who are out of touch with the job market.
In addition, the brewery supports an abbey in Uganda, where the monks there aim to set up agricultural, educational, and healthcare projects for the local population. La Trappe also does its best to conserve the environment by recycling water, reusing waste, and buying raw materials in its own region to reduce its carbon footprint while saving on transportation costs.

With its range of high-quality beers and commitment to social responsibility and sustainability, La Trappe continues to thrive to this very day. The brewery’s ethos is what makes it one of the most respected Trappist breweries in the Netherlands, alongside its various award-winning brews!
