Kaiju (怪獣) means "strange beast" in Japanese – think Godzilla, King Kong, and all the big monstrous baddies from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Created by 3 nerdy Australian beer scientists in 2013, Kaiju! Beer birthed its own tribe of monstrously flavourful creatures, each of them unashamedly intense, and devastatingly good.
Kaiju, the brewery, uses the idea of a strange beast to inspire the creation of their intensely flavourful monsters of their own - their delicious brews. In 2013, the brewery was founded by a beer-loving trio: Nat, his brother Callum, and Callum’s wife. They were originally known as Monster Mash, and the trio previously operated as a gypsy brewer.
After a certain energy drink company complained about the similarity the name “Monster Mash” shared, the trio re-established their brewery as Kaiju. Kaiju’s beers may be terrifyingly delicious, but it is their packaging that sets them apart from the crowd. The talented New York-based artist, Mikey Burton, conceptualises the trio’s love for Japanese kaiju films and expresses it on the can(vas).

The labels are not only unique, but also quirky enough to grab the attention of any passerby. Most of Kaiju’s labels feature various strange monsters but some depict the valiant heroes that battle the kaiju.
Don’t judge a book by its cover; don’t judge a beer by its can. That’s a good philosophy to follow but unfortunately, looks matter. When Callum realised that many other breweries like their own were also brewing intensely hoppy beers, he knew that they needed something more to stand out from the rest. Kaiju’s idiosyncratic style was thus born from competitive necessity - not that we’re complaining!
Of course, Kaiju’s wacky labels aren’t the only cool thing about the brewery; the flavours of its brews are amazing too! In other words, many customers try Kaiju’s beers because of the alluring designs, but they stay for the tasty and intense flavours.
Kaiju’s yummy selection of brews
Kaiju’s Krush Tropical Pale Ale is the brewery’s most popular concoction, and the pineapple monstrosity on the can has become some sort of a mascot for the brewery. Krush was so beloved by the crowd that it was responsible for more than half of Kaiju’s sales in 2020! The pineapple pale ale features a super-clean malt profile that complements its intense tropical fruit flavours, leaving you feeling fresh and clean.
Besides the tasty tropical creation, Kaiju also has a wide range of alcoholic brews, including its Golden Axe Apple Cider and its Aftermath Double IPA. Golden Axe is a refreshing cider that has an aroma of fresh-cut apples and blossom, with just enough sweetness to satisfy.
Meanwhile, the Aftermath Double IPA is a monstrously hoppy pale ale with ludicrous amounts of dank, pine, and citrus aromas that will lead you to massive bitterness laced with caramelised orange notes. This deadly drink is actually Kaiju’s first brew and when it was launched, it single-handedly caused a statewide shortage of Simcoe hops!
