let's tap into their story!

Leffe’s history dates all the way back to 1152, where Premonstratensian canonical Norbertines, like monks, lived in the Notre-Dame de Leffe Abbey. The Norbertine canons had a very open vision and loved to engage with the people around them. As such, they were known for their warm hospitality they provided to guests and pilgrims.
Leffe History, with Jonny Tyson
It was only in 1240 that the canons started brewing beer as a refreshing and healthy alternative to drinking water that travellers could quench their thirst with. Back then, because of the numerous epidemics that plagued the European territory at the time, drinking water was unsafe. Fortunately, an ideal solution emerged: beer!

During the brewing process, the boiling temperature killed the microbes, which made beer safe to drink. What started as a necessity eventually became a well-loved tradition of the Norbertines, and the brewery is still churning out delicious beers today.
After the French Revolution, religious life was at a standstill. Leffe Abbey was destroyed several times in the early 18th century but it was temporarily brought back in 1902 by the Norbertine canons from France. In 1929, the Tongerlo Abbey was destroyed by fire, so the canons from Tongerlo had to seek refuge in the Leffe Abbey. After the Tongerlo Abbey was rebuilt, some of the canons from Tongerlo decided to reside permanently in Leffe.

Leffe’s signature brews

The brewery produces a range of beers, including the popular Leffe Blonde, Dubbel, and Tripel. The Leffe Blond is one of the world’s most recognisable Belgian beers that is made up of age-old expertise and a blend of pale malts, speciality hops, Belgian yeasts and aromatic spices. The award-winning golden ale has hints of vanilla and clove that complements its smooth, bittersweet body.
Another flagship beer of Leffe is the Leffe Brune Belgian Dubbel - an authentic dark abbey beer that has a full, slightly sweet flavour alongside hints of coffee and chocolate. The recipes for Leffe’s beers were created in 1240, but were only revived in 1952 by Father Abbot Nys and brewer Albert Lootvoet. The two were able to closely follow Leffe’s secret beer recipes while respecting the brewing processes of the past.
Thanks to their efforts, they were so successful that their production was struggling to keep up with the growing demand of Leffe beer lovers. Thankfully, Leffe received significant investments and financial support from other breweries in the 1970s, which later merged together to form AB InBev - a multinational drink and brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium. With proper financial support, Leffe was able to continue its growth in success and become one of the most renowned Belgian breweries in the world today!
