let's tap into their story!

Weihenstephaner is a German brewery located in Freising, Bavaria, and it is considered the oldest operating brewery in the world. It was originally established as a Benedictine monastery in 725 AD by Saint Corbinian - a Frankish bishop - and his twelve companions.

the world's
oldest brewery

The first historical reference to hops at Weihenstephan was in 768 AD. At that time, there was a hop garden in the vicinity of the monastery, which was obviously used for brewing. However, it wasn’t until 1040 AD that beer brewing officially began at Weihenstephan. During that year, Abbot Arnold managed to obtain an official licence to brew and sell beer, which marked the birth of Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery.
Unfortunately, between 1085 and 1463, the monastery completely burned down 4 times, was destroyed or depopulated by 3 plagues, various famines, and a great earthquake. On top of that, the monastery continued to become a target of destruction by several parties, including the Emperor of Ludwig the Bavarian in 1336, the Swedes and the French in the Thirty Years War, and the Austrians in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Despite its countless destructions, the Benedictines did not give up. With their admirable Bavarian tenacity, they rebuilt the monastery brewery from scratch each time it fell, and the building rose majestically like a phoenix from the ashes every single time.
In 1516, Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria issued the Bavarian Purity Law which dictated that only barley, hops, and water are permitted for use in brewing beer. This was a huge milestone for the art of brewing, and was what founded the fame of the Weihenstephan beer.

The brewery has been operating under the auspices of the Benedictine monks until the secularisation of Bavaria in 1803, where the state took over the brewery. Fortunately, that did not shatter the brewery; it continued to function under the secular supervision of the royal holdings at Schleissheim.
1921 was the year that the brewery got the name we know today: Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. Today, the oxymoronic brewery is the world’s oldest, but also one of the most advanced breweries out there. The brewery now stands upon the Weihenstephan hill in old Bavaria, holding its head high as it is surrounded by the traditional German countryside and its highly skilled brewmasters.

In addition to their brewing operations, Weihenstephaner also operates one of the most prestigious brewing schools in the world, the Technical University of Munich at Weihenstephan. The school offers a range of programs in brewing and beverage technology, and many of the world's top brewers have trained there.

Weihenstephaner: producing top quality brews for centuries

For over a thousand years, Weihenstephaner has been brewing beer using traditional methods and the highest quality ingredients. From hops to malt to even water, the brewery ensures that each and every ingredient that goes into its beers are crème de la crème. In addition, after the brewing process, the brewery keeps the beers in its storage cellars for about 30 days to give them the opportunity to mature.

If its name isn’t already obvious enough, Weihenstephaner specialises in classic German styles, such as its German Hefeweissbier, German Hefeweissbier Dunkel, and Vitus German Strong Weizenbock, which have become famous around the world for their rich flavours and smooth finishes.

Weihenstephaner fully embraces sustainability!

Besides its full commitment to brewing amazing beer, Weihenstephaner is also committed to its environment. Both the brewery and the logistics centre are fully powered by green energy, and the residual material from beer production is sold to farmers as certified feed. Weihenstephaner also has steps in place for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, optimising its water consumption, and recycling its used materials.

Weihenstephaner is truly a globally recognised craft beer giant of its industry, with its beers being distributed throughout Europe, Asia, North America, and beyond. Despite the brewery's rich history and global reach, it remains thankful to its home by being conscious of the environment while maintaining the high standards of its beers!
