It all began with Anthony von Mandl, a British Canadian who started his alcoholic ventures with wine in the 1970s. Von Mandl marketed his wine out of his car and eventually in a small office in Canada’s Vancouver region. In 1981, von Mandl purchased his first vineyard, Mission Hill, and later acquired 3 other vineyards - all located in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia.
In 1996, as part of his company Mark Anthony Brands, von Mandl launched Mike’s Hard Lemonade - a brand of flavoured alcoholic lemonades. That was the start of his hard seltzer adventure otherwise known as White Claw.

White Claw was launched in 2016, when the Mark Anthony Brands company decided to create a new alcoholic beverage that nestles comfortably in the venn diagram of health, wellness, and convenience. The result was White Claw, a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate, and gluten-free hard seltzer.

White Claw: the viral internet sensation

White Claw broke the internet just like how its namesake, the majestic White Claw wave breaks against a cliff. White Claw is more than just a refreshing drink to carry you through wild parties; it is a delicious and comfortable option for health conscious folks or for those who simply don’t care much for beer. As the viral catchphrase by comedian Trevor Wallace goes, “ain’t no laws when you’re drinking Claws, baby”!
When White Claw was launched, it took a couple of years before the brand blew up - all thanks to the power of social media. When users started posting photos and videos with the hashtag #clawlife on Twitter, the brand started to gain traction and eventually went viral. White Claw’s growth was so phenomenal that the brand became synonymous with the entire hard seltzer category, much like how the brand Frisbee became synonymous with the flying disc.

In 2019, it was reported that White Claw accounts for over half of all total seltzer sales and continued to be memed while being a party staple. In fact, White Claw was flying so quickly off the shelves that the manufacturer was struggling to keep it in stock. In that year, the hard seltzer brand had reported multiple shortages in bars and stores across the U.S., and even online.

White Claw’s array of flavours and its variety packs heavily contributed to its success, as having a diverse lineup plays an important role for hard seltzers across the board. When White Claw was first established, it released a plethora of fruity hard seltzers including Natural Lime, Black Cherry, Ruby Grapefruit, Raspberry, and Mango.

Since its launch, White Claw has become more than just a hard seltzer brand; it is a cultural phenomenon that inspired memes, merchandise, and even a parody song. People love it as a healthy alcoholic alternative, a refreshing party drink, and they also love it for the fun and trendy memes the brand itself brings.
