I am St. Bernardus Tokyo — born in the buzzing streets of Japan and brewed for adventurous palates.
My story begins in 2012, when the very first St. Bernardus-themed café opened in the Kanda district of Tokyo. To mark the occasion, the monks back home brewed a special one-off beer just for the launch. It was meant to be a fleeting tribute… but the world wanted more. So in 2020, I returned — new recipe, same spirit — as a Belgian-style wheat ale infused with wanderlust.
I’m brewed with a generous dose of wheat, unfiltered and hazy golden, crowned with a snow-white collar. My soul sits somewhere between a classic Witbier and a farmhouse Saison. On the nose, I’m fresh and floral — think chamomile and citrus peel, banana esters and red apple, with just a flicker of clove and vanilla from our signature St. Bernardus yeast. Light on the tongue but full of nuance, I finish with a gentle snap of spice, a whisper of bitterness, and just enough sour to keep things interesting.
My can? That’s not just packaging — it’s a neon-lit tribute to Tokyo nightlife, designed by West Flemish illustrator Jonas Devacht, who captured the glow and grit of Kanda’s alleyways in one electric piece of art. Whether you’re pairing me with grilled salmon, gyoza, or lime panna cotta — or sipping me under city lights — I’m here to take you places. Kanpai — your beer journey starts here.
The history of St. Bernardus, a former Trappist brewery, can be traced back to the early 1900s, when the Trappists fled to Watou, Belgium and started making cheese as a source of income. In 1930, the abbey was taken over by Evariste Deconinck, who later reached a 30-year agreement with a neighbouring abbey - the Sint-Sixtus Westvleteren - to brew and market his Trappist beers under licence. It was only in 1992 that the brewery started producing its beers under the St. Bernardus label that we know today, which features the iconic smiling monk holding a glass. Throughout its history, the brewery has been producing authentic and high-quality Belgian beers that are highly-respected by beer lovers and have gone on to win multiple awards over the years!
