VAN DEN BOSSCHE

    let's tap into their story!

In 1897, Arthur Van den Bossche bought a plot of land on the beautiful square in Sint-Lievens-Esse, a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The plot of land served as both a home for a brewery, as well as a chocolaterie, given that Van den Bossche married the daughter of the Callebaut family of brewers and chocolatiers.
In 1907, the Buffalo Stout was accidentally created when a young apprentice forgot to stir the contents of the kettles, which resulted in a beer that was completely roasted from the caramelisation at the bottom of the kettle. After tasting the “failed” creation, the senior brewers were surprisingly pleased and thus, an iconic beer was born.
After Van den Bossche’s death in 1925, his wife Elenora Callebaut took over the brewery and handed it over to her sons - Willy and Mark Van den Bossche - 10 years later. Fast forward to 1957, the Van den Bossche Brewery introduced its Pater Lieven range of abbey style beers in honour of the Sint Livinus Festival.

In 1976, Mark Van den Bossche’s son, Ignace, started to work in the brewery. This was the same year that the brewery was modernised! When the brewery’s 100th anniversary came, the Van den Bossches decided to completely restyle their Pater Lieven brand.

A few years later, Ignace’s son, Bruno, managed to strengthen and expand the brewery’s sales as the commercial manager. Since then, the brewery has also started exporting its beers!

Van den Bossche Brewery’s signature brews

Van den Bossche’s first iconic beer was the Buffalo Stout, which had been renamed Buffalo 1907 in 2006. The supposed “mistake” of a young apprentice birthed a fragrant stout with an evolved taste of caramel, a hint of roasted coffee, and a delicate bitter aftertaste that’s reminiscent of dark chocolate. The Buffalo lineup also includes the Bitter, the Belgian Stout, and the Grand Cru.
In 1957, another iconic lineup - the Pater Lieven range of abbey style beers - of Van den Bossche Brewery was born. The lineup includes the Pater Lieven Blond, Bruin, Tripel, Wit, and Kerstpater. The Pater Lieven beers were the first beers brewed for the Sint Livinus Festival - which is celebrated once every 50 years. 50 years later in 2007, Van den Bossche Brewery created a new beer - Livinus - on occasion of the Sint Livinus festivities once again.

Today, Van den Bossche Brewery continues to be run by the 4th generation of the Van den Bossche family - Bruno Van den Bossche. Bruno took over the brewery in 2015 and has been leading it to success ever since.
