Crafted by Brouwerij Van den Bossche in the village of Sint-Lievens-Esse, I, the Pater Lieven Bruin, carry both the name and spirit of Pater Lieven — a legendary Flemish monk remembered for his compassion and quiet strength. Since 1995, I have served as the dark, comforting counterpart to the brewery’s flagship range, embodying the warmth and richness of Belgian Dubbel tradition passed down through generations.
I pour a deep mahogany brown, crowned with a creamy tan head. My aroma invites you in with notes of dark caramel, dried figs, and a gentle touch of spice. On the palate, I unfold slowly: layers of malt richness, hints of chocolate and stewed fruit, and a toasted bread backbone, all harmonized by a balancing bitterness that never oversteps. Each sip is a slow dance of sweetness and depth, brewed with quiet confidence.
Rich yet approachable, traditional yet timeless — I’m more than just a brown ale. I am a tribute to centuries of monastic brewing, bottled with care to bring joy, reflection, and a little indulgence to your day. Drink me slowly, and let my legacy linger.
Van den Bossche Brewery is a family-run brewery which is still currently run by the 4th generation of Van den Bossche - Bruno. The brewery was founded in 1897, when Arthur Van den Bossche purchased a plot of land in Sint-Lievens-Esse and built a brewery and a chocolaterie there. Though the brewery’s first iconic brew was created via a young apprentice’s mistake, the rest of its beers continued the legacy of its first signature beer - the Buffalo Stout. In honour of the Sint Livinus festivities, Van den Bossche Brewery created the Pater Lieven range of authentic abbey beers that contributed widely to its success. Today, the brewery continues to brew delicious and flavourful beers that everyone can enjoy!
